Microsoft and Nokia have received a huge setback, as cell phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson has joined the Google Android camp. About 14 other members have joined the Open Handset Alliance (OHA); these consist of AKM Semiconductor Inc., Atheros Communications, ASUSTek Computer Inc., ARM, Borqs, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Teleca AB, and Toshiba Corp.

This news confirms that the first Google Android cell phone, T-Mobile G1, made by HTC must be doing well in sales figures, for other members to sign up. HTC expects to sell around 500,000 by the end of the year; the G1 was only launched in the fall of this year.

Sony Ericsson has planned to release their Google Android handset in mid-2009, the cell phone maker wanted in on the action, as an Android-based handset is much cheaper than those running on Nokia and Microsoft OS-based handsets. Google Android’s future looked uncertain, but the signing of these new members has just cemented its future.
